Here is Google's AI overview to the search enquiry "writers who inspire other writers":
"Many writers find inspiration in the works and lives of other authors. Some prominent examples include J.K. Rowling, Stephen King, Maya Angelou, Ernest Hemingway, Jane Austen, and George Orwell, all of whom have significantly impacted the literary world and continue to inspire aspiring and established writers. Additionally, figures like Neil Gaiman, Haruki Murakami, and Alice Munro are often cited as sources of inspiration for their unique styles and approaches to storytelling."
Here is my take: Stephen King, Maya Angelou, Ernest Hemingway, Jane Austen, and George Orwell are all talented authors who deserve praise for their respective contributions. However, with the exception of maybe Stephen King, how many of you know Maya Angelou's works outside of "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", or Hemingway for something besides "The Old Man and the Sea", or Orwell for his darker political and social works like "Down and Out in Paris and London"? If left up to AI you may never know these works.
Now, Neil Gaiman has been embroiled in accusations of sexual assault for which, to the best of my knowledge, no charges have been laid to date. I am not here to debate his guilt or innocence, just to point out some of the shortcomings with AI "overviews".
To me, this is even more galling in the case of J.K. Rowling. I know that the Harry Potter series has been extremely successful and has devoted fans all over the world. I am not one of them. Some have suggested that many of the ideas and storylines in Harry Potter were "lifted" from other, lesser known authors. Some have suggested that J.K. Rowling's first couple of books were written with dubious skill. Many have seen comments J.K. Rowling has made about Trans people. What does AI have to say about that? Probably very little.
AI threatens our humanity in ways which are much more insidious than the "Terminator" rhetoric. Be aware. Be educated. And above all, be human - warts and all!
